Introduction to Bill Viola - Pioneer of Video Art (in Russian)

The Almaty Museum of Arts continues its lecture series on artists whose works are represented in our collection. As part of this series, there will be a lecture dedicated to Bill Viola—an American artist and one of the key figures in the history of video art.

At the center of Viola’s artistic practice are reflections on life and death, consciousness, and the spiritual dimensions of human experience. His work has developed at the intersection of philosophy, religious texts, and poetry, transforming video into a space of slowed perception.

The museum’s collection features Viola's installation Stations. In this work the artist contemplates the journey of the soul and the state between the physical and spiritual. Five vertical fabric screens display human figures immersing in and rising from water in a slowed rhythm, as if pulled from the usual flow of life.

Elemental forces, particularly water and fire, play a crucial role in his works, serving as symbols of profound inner transformation. The images are reflected in black granite slabs on the floor, entering into a dialogue with the poetry of the Sufi mystic Jalal ad-Din Rumi from the 13th century, for whom water symbolized spiritual renewal. In Stations, it becomes a metaphor for acceptance and rebirth.
