One Steppe Forward*: Women Artists in Kazakhstan

This event invites audiences to a lecture and workshop exploring the stories of women artists in Kazakhstan across time. Art historian Dilyara Sharipova will present her research on the subject, while architect and cultural activist Asel Yeszhanova will lead a participatory workshop.

Where is Modern Art History?

November 13

Almaty Museum of Arts and New York University launch an international research seminar on modern art history in Central Asia. The public programme on 13–14 November will present discussions and panels that re-examine the histories of Central Asian art, foreground feminist and alternative methodologies, and explore transregional conversations such as Afro-Asian artistic connections.

December 6 – celebrate Aisha Galymbayeva at our Museum! Join us in Şeberhana to create your own moving qyz (girl) and jigit (boy) paper characters, inspired by Aisha Galymbayeva’s love for traditional Kazakh clothing. Dress them in beautiful Kazakh outfits and bring your creativity to life!

The Almaty Museum of Arts dedicates a day every two months to an artist from its collection. Discussions, guided tours, film screenings, and workshops provide a deeper look into the artist’s world and creative legacy.

The first artist featured in this series of events will be Aisha Galymbayeva, a pioneer of Kazakh visual art. Her paintings, depicting village life, industrial landscapes, and expressive female portraits, explore themes of everyday life and reflect the changing role of women in society.
