The title of the concert Music for a man with a movie camera draws upon Dziga Vertov’s seminal film. Just as Man with a movie camera became a manifesto for a new cinematic language, this programme serves as a musical manifesto of structure and rhythm, where sound speaks for itself, free from external narrative.
Much like Vertov constructs his film through the rhythmic organisation of frames, minimalists build music through the rhythmic organisation of sound. Repetition, shifting, acceleration, and deceleration are their shared principles.
A classic of world cinema comes to the Main Stage screen. Meanwhile, the musicians’ scores explore diverse ‘schools’ of minimalism: American (Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Philip Glass), European (Arvo Pärt), and post-minimalism (Pavel Karmanov, Giya Kancheli). These compositions are bound by a shared pursuit of formal simplicity and depth of experience, offering clarity and openness to the listener.
Programme for the Music for a man with a movie camera concert:
1 S.Reich - «Electric Counterpoint»
2 T.Riley- «G song»
3 P.Glass - String Quartet #3 «Mishima»
4 P.Karmanov - «Cambridge music»
5 А.Párt - «Summa», «Mozart-Adagio»
6 G.Kancheli - «Simple music»
