Almaty Museum of Arts continues its lecture series dedicated to the artists showcased in our collection. Our next lecture will focus on Yayoi Kusama, one of the most prominent female artists of our time, whose practice spans painting, installation, performance and literature.
Kusama’s artistic life began in Japan and later unfolded in the vibrant New York art scene in the 1960s, becoming a story of seeking freedom and overcoming prejudice. Both as a woman and a migrant, she faced a difficult struggle for recognition and had to fight for her right to be heard.
The artist herself defines her art as “art of obsession”. Her iconic polka dots, limitless nets and rhythmic patterns rooted from her childhood experiences and became a way to speak about anxiety, pain and desire to dissolve into infinity.
“Infinity Rooms” take a special place in her practice. The installation “Love is Calling”, presented on the second floor of our museum, invites visitors into a space of light, reflections, and perpetual movement. Kusama’s own voice, reading a love poem in Japanese, adds intimacy to the installation and enhances the sense of total immersion.
We invite you to our lecture of “Yayoi Kusama and the Art of Infinity” to explore the artist’s path together and to understand how the idea of infinity evolved into one of the most iconic statements in contemporary art.
