We are announcing an open call for our first experimental photography course – JAS Photo!
Over the course of 10 sessions, you will learn the fundamentals of photography: discover how a camera works, learn how to look at and analyze art, and immerse yourself in your own creative process. The course will culminate in an exhibition of the participants’ works. The course is led by photographer Nurtas Sissekenov.

We’ll bring the snacks, you bring your craft project. Allow the mind to wander and hands to take over. Handcraft and chill with us!

The Almaty Museum of Arts is pleased to announce the launch of its latest initiative: the Museum Visual Club

On 19 July, the Almaty Museum of Arts will dedicate the day to the graphic artist Makum Kisamedinov, a seminal figure in 20th-century Kazakh art and a prominent representative of The Kazakh Sixtiers.

How do faces express different emotions? That is one question that artist Bill Viola kept coming back to. In his video works, he would often extremely slow down a single emotion or gesture, breaking it down into its basic elements. In this experimental art activity, participants are invited to assume an emotion and get a friend to draw a portrait of them. We will end up with our own portrait gallery of feelings.

Organized in collaboration with the Bölme School, Nazila Nagimova's artist talk explores felt as a living material that blends traditional craftsmanship, contemporary artistic expression, and the artist's personal experience.

Who lives in your imagination? In this workshop, each participant will invent their own unique character and bring it to life in felt – cutting out its silhouette, embellishing it with details, giving it a name and a story.

This month we will be spending time with the Buryat-Kazakh artist Serenjab Baldano and his magnificent, mysterious and mischievous wooden masks, on display at the Qonaqtar exhibition. We prepared a series of drawing prompts that will help us deeper appreciate the stories that each mask holds.

*New* program alert – we are launching a monthly craft club! Bring whatever craft project you’ve been working on or been meaning to work on. Let’s knit, macramé, embroider, collage or doodle together. We’ll have tea, cookies and (in case inspiration or materials are needed) fabric and paper scraps to work with.

Spend your Saturday in an original way with us! In this workshop, taking inspiration from traditional patchwork blankets, we will play with multicolored papercuts to create a collective quraq körpe.

As part of the Qonaqtar public program, ethnomusicologist Saida Elemanova will give a lecture on the role of music in ritual culture and traditional worldviews.
